Brixton Box

Here we worked closely with the architects to create a simple but striking two-storey extension. The cedar box houses a new family bathroom and a study that can double as a spare room, looking on to the side terrace. A window overlooking the garden has a flush cedar-plank shutter to strengthen the boxe's analogy when the room is not in use.

On the ground floor the kitchen/dining room embraces the garden by means of 2.6m high sliding glass doors and a floor of green slate slabs that runs outside at the same level to form a terrace. The kitchen units are finished in red cherry and the counter is honed black slate.

The box sits above a glass-to-glass corner, with a spindly column providing the only visible means of support. New galvanised steel grillage steps from the living room French doors create an additional connection from interior to garden.
